The Major symptom associated with Acid Reflux is Heartburn, this is characterized by burning discomfort behind the breastbone (sternum). Sufferers may also have one of these findings which can include esophagitis (reflux esophagitis); inflammatory changes in the esophageal lining (mucosa); strictures, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia); and chronic chest pain.
The other typical symptoms would include cough, hoarseness, voice changes, chronic ear ache, burning chest pains, nausea or sinusitis.
Some complicatons related to Acid Reflux and these would include stricture formation, Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal ulcers, and this would possibly even lead to esophageal cancer, which is especially common among adults that are over 60 years old.

Among Children and infants Acid Reflux symptoms may be difficult to detect. Compare to Adult symptoms, the symptoms in children may vary, and these may include repeated vomiting, effortless spitting up, coughing, and other respiratory problems. Inconsolable crying, failure to gain adequate weight, refusing food, bad breath, and belching or burping. A specific symptom is not universal amongst children.

Around the world it has been approximated by Health organizations that of all babies born each year, up to and in excess of 35% (depending on the location) have difficulties with reflux within the forst few months after their birth. While most of them will outgrow their reflux before their first year, a significant number will not.

The occasional heartburn is common amongst people but does not necessarily mean one has Acid Reflux. Sufferers who generally have heartburn symptoms more than once a week are at risk of developing GERD.
