The Causes of Acid Reflux

Typically Acid Reflux within an individual is caused by the failure of the Anti-Reflux Barrier (ARB) and its primary component, the GastroEsophageal valve (GEV). Further understanding of the GEV has continued to progress in recent years, and currently a lot more focus is being placed on the GEV, rather than the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), as the largest contributor to the ARB. The world’s health Researchers have shown the GEV’s robust nature and have shown that the intact GEV alone is highly competent to stop reflux.
As an example, in cadavers, where there is no muscle tone or LES pressure present within the stomach, the walls of stomach rupture when filled with sufficient water before reflux can occur. This easily shows the GEV’s power to stop reflux even in the absence of any LES pressure, this is an important factor.

Other paradoxical causes of Acid Reflux-like symptoms includes insufficient stomach acid (hypochlorhydria). Below the stomach the valve that empties the stomach into the intestines is triggered by the level of acidity. If there is insufficient acid, this valve does not open and the stomach contents are churned and forced up into the esophagus. There is still, however enough acidity to irritate and partially corrode the esophagus.

Factors that have been known to contribute to Acid Reflux iclude:

* Hiatus hernia, this increases the likelihood of Reflux due to mechanical and motility factors
* Gallstones, these can impede the flow of bile into the Duodenum which in turn can affect the ability to neutralize gastric acid
* Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, this can be present with increased gastric acidity due to gastrin production in the stomach
* Scleroderma and systemic sclerosis, these can feature esophageal dysmotility
* Hypercalcemia, this can increase gastrin production, leading to an increased level of acidity

On other studies Acid Reflux has been linked to laryngitis, chronic cough, pulmonary fibrosis, earache, and asthma, even when not clinically apparent, as well as to laryngopharyngeal reflux and ulcers of the vocal cords.

Emphasis on the causes of Acid reflux has been made by World health authorities in order to find the solutions to prevent the onset, which will avoid having Acid Reflux and reduce their costs on the treatment.
